DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio: Kenny Harris workshop. The Figure in the Environment. We will learn how to bring together work from life\, from studies\, and from photos to create convincing paintings of a figure in an environment. We will first work in the field to create an oil study from life of an external environment.  We will then move inside and work with the model from life.  Using our oil sketch and photos for our environment reference\, we will place the figure in a believable space.   A unified palette will bring cohesion to the picture.  I will demo both in the field and from the model\, as well as help everyone hands-on to bring expression and control to their figurative work.  \n​

DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio: Kathy Anderson workshop. Flower Painting Outside and in the Studio. This 3 day workshop will consist of some plein air days in some of Whidbey Island’s  beautiful gardens\, and also one or two  studio days.  Kathy will show you how to simplify a flower scene with big shapes and a strong block-in. Kathy will demo in the morning\, and the students will paint in the afternoon.  On the second day\, we will return to the site and Kathy will demo on how to finish a painting from the block-in.  The students will either work on the same painting or start a new one\, whichever they prefer. For the studio day\, Kathy will again demo\, with the focus on how to design a floral still life that has a fresh and natural look with lots of movement. The students then will set up their own still-lifes in the afternoon. We’ll talk about how to finish the painting using digital images\, or how to set up again at home. \n​

SUMMARY:W.I. Fine Art Studio: Fred Wessel workshop
DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio: Fred Wessel workshop. Egg Tempera and the Early Renaissance Method of Developing Fleshtones. This course will teach the technique of painting flesh ones in egg tempera painting as it was practiced in 14th and 15th Century Italy and as documented by Cennino Cennini in his book Il  Libro dell’Arte. Tempera painting is a medium for those who love drawing. This painting technique is fussy and requires great discipline but pays great dividends to those who learn to master it.    The paint is actually applied in cross-hatch strokes.  It combines the best of both watercolor (application of translucent layers of color) and gouache techniques (using semi opaques to re-establish  the light areas).  The brilliant and jewel-like surface is often described as luminescent. The paints are made by mixing powdered pigments with the yolk of an egg.  This color mixture is applied over a detailed under-drawing thus allowing the artist to separate the painting process into distinct tasks.  The artist first composes\, draws and establishes the values of the painting in black and white.  The painter can now give his or her full attention to issues of color. This course is technique rather than product oriented.  Working from Old Master reproductions\, we will paint a head starting with an ink underdrawing\, progressing to a green underpainting\, adding verdaccio in the shadow areas\, adding reds to warm areas\, then glazing warm tones and judiciously taking away the greens.
