DESCRIPTION:Leonid Gervits\n\n\nPainting Flowers/Still Life \n​ \nMay 13 – 15 \n$625 \nSkill level: all levels \n​ \nFlowers are one of the most difficult things to paint in art. But as hard as it is\, it is also an exciting challenge and pays off in many ways. Human cultures around the world consider flowers synonymous with pure beauty. In painting history there are many wonderful examples of artists trying to capture this beauty (especially in west European art): Manet\, Fantin-Latour\, Crivelli\, Van Gogh\, etc. \nFor the purpose of education\, painting florals means much more than painting a still life because flowers are not “dead nature;” they are alive with light and movement\, and it can even be said they have personalities. Capturing the countless varieties of shapes\, colors\, tones and vibrations of the flower is an exciting task for students at any level. \n​ \n Leonid Gervits belongs to the European/Russian realist tradition of painting and drawing. In 1966\, he graduated from the Odessa Art College; and in 1973\, he received an MFA from Repin Academy\, where he later worked as a professor for sixteen years. Mr. Gervits moved to the United States in 1991\, working as an instructor at the New York Academy from 1992 to 2000. He has been an instructor at the Art Students League since 1997. An artist of the realist tradition and of serious academic training\, Mr. Gervits is able to work in a broad spectrum of genres. \n​

Because paint breathes life into an image. Each brush mark is made with intention\, and the accidents that inherently happen are the cornerstone to a painting feeling alive. \n\nIn this 5 day intensive workshop\, we will explore how to bring our paintings to life\, even when using photography as our reference. This workshop is designed to be different from most figurative painting classes. We will zoom in and scale up from traditional figurative painting\, abstracting the body so we can focus on the language of skin. We will work in layers over 5 days to get the most luminous result. This is taught in a very understandable and simple way\, and the technique can be applied to many other subjects besides the figure. \n\nUltimately\, this class will be about the dance between intention and impulse\, control and abandon\, so we learn to create paintings that feel alive\, in every sense of that word. \n  \n\n  \nAt least some oil painting experience is recommended but not required. \n

DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio: Fred Wessel workshop. Egg Tempera and the Early Renaissance Method of Developing Fleshtones. This course will teach the technique of painting flesh ones in egg tempera painting as it was practiced in 14th and 15th Century Italy and as documented by Cennino Cennini in his book Il  Libro dell’Arte. Tempera painting is a medium for those who love drawing. This painting technique is fussy and requires great discipline but pays great dividends to those who learn to master it.    The paint is actually applied in cross-hatch strokes.  It combines the best of both watercolor (application of translucent layers of color) and gouache techniques (using semi opaques to re-establish  the light areas).  The brilliant and jewel-like surface is often described as luminescent. The paints are made by mixing powdered pigments with the yolk of an egg.  This color mixture is applied over a detailed under-drawing thus allowing the artist to separate the painting process into distinct tasks.  The artist first composes\, draws and establishes the values of the painting in black and white.  The painter can now give his or her full attention to issues of color. This course is technique rather than product oriented.  Working from Old Master reproductions\, we will paint a head starting with an ink underdrawing\, progressing to a green underpainting\, adding verdaccio in the shadow areas\, adding reds to warm areas\, then glazing warm tones and judiciously taking away the greens.

DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio: Kathy Anderson workshop. Flower Painting Outside and in the Studio. This 3 day workshop will consist of some plein air days in some of Whidbey Island’s  beautiful gardens\, and also one or two  studio days.  Kathy will show you how to simplify a flower scene with big shapes and a strong block-in. Kathy will demo in the morning\, and the students will paint in the afternoon.  On the second day\, we will return to the site and Kathy will demo on how to finish a painting from the block-in.  The students will either work on the same painting or start a new one\, whichever they prefer. For the studio day\, Kathy will again demo\, with the focus on how to design a floral still life that has a fresh and natural look with lots of movement. The students then will set up their own still-lifes in the afternoon. We’ll talk about how to finish the painting using digital images\, or how to set up again at home. \n​

DESCRIPTION:Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio: Dominique Medici. Gaining the ability to work quickly\, and with precision\, is key in your development as a painter. The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition is to practice with shorter poses. The time restraint forces you to forego detail\, see the big picture\, and focus on gesture and large masses. This is the secret behind all great works. In this class\, we will work with  a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim. Dominique will provide frequent demos\, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps\, as well as critique and instruction each session. Since simplicity is one of our goals\, we will be using a limited palette — a limited palette of only 6 colors; Titanium White\, Cadmium Yellow Light\, Quinacridone Red\, Cadmium Red Light\, Cobalt Teal and Blue-Black (W&N). This palette is dynamic and will help us understand color relationships. We will focus on 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion\, Value\, Color\, and Edge\, which will help us to accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame. Practicing this way over the course of the month will help to sharpen your observation\, and take your skill to a new level.
